Red cell distribution width (RDW) represents the variability in the size of circulating erythrocytes. In heart failure, systemic and myocardial iron stores are depleted, which raises the possibility that iron deficiency rather than lack of hemoglobin (Hb) might be of primary concern in heart failure. Treatment with intravenous iron can improve the symptoms of CHF in patients with reduced LV ejection fraction even in the absence of anemia.
